Temecula in one paragraph

Temecula sits in southwest Riverside County, where I-15 meets the 79. West of the freeway is Old Town, a few walkable blocks of restaurants, tasting rooms and shops along Front Street. East of the freeway, Rancho California Road climbs into Wine Country, with most of the valley's wineries along it and the parallel De Portola Road. The valley has been a recognized American Viticultural Area since 1984, and summer afternoons are hot while mornings and evenings cool off, which is why balloon flights launch at dawn.

Most visitors come for wine, but a good trip mixes in a brewery, a balloon ride, a long lunch at a winery restaurant, or an evening in Old Town.

Local tip: weekends are busy from spring through fall. If you can visit on a weekday, tastings are quieter and resorts are usually cheaper.

Common questions

What is Temecula known for?

Temecula is best known for Temecula Valley Wine Country, with dozens of wineries east of I-15, plus hot air balloon rides at sunrise, the walkable Old Town district along Front Street, and Pechanga Resort Casino.

How far is Temecula from San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles?

Temecula is roughly an hour's drive from downtown San Diego and from much of Orange County, and about an hour and a half to two hours from Los Angeles, depending on traffic. Weekend and rush-hour traffic on I-15 can add a lot of time.

Is Temecula worth visiting if I don't drink wine?

Yes. You can take a sunrise balloon ride, spend a day at a brewery or two, explore Old Town's shops and restaurants, bring kids to Pennypickle's Workshop, or head to Lake Skinner. Many winery restaurants are also worth a visit for the food and views alone.

When is the best time to visit Temecula?

Spring and fall are the most comfortable. Summer afternoons are hot, so plan outdoor things for the morning. Weekdays are calmer than weekends year-round, and the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, usually held the first weekend of June, is the busiest weekend of the year.
